MeetBot for Supybot (MootBot Clone)
Many of us know of and have met MootBot. The authors describe MootBot as:
Mootbot is an eggdrop script that is used by the Ubuntu Scribes team to log meetings. It logs messages that begin with certain keywords in an attempt to make it easier to summarise the meeting and introduce a defined structure.
If you've been in #ubuntu-meeting then you've definitely seen it work. It's a very efficient tool for managing Meetings.
If you're an Ubuntu user, then you've undoubtedly met with ubottu. This bot has a large number of plugins (Bantracker, Bugtracker, Encyclopedia, IRCLogin, Lart, Mess, PackageInfo, Webcal) that are using to manage channel information. These plugins are EXTREMELY helpful to channels.
Of course these aren't just for Ubuntu channels. Many people use these in bots in their own channels. Supybot has a very solid support system and offer excellent support as well as a solid system. This is where Eggdrop falls short. Don't except fast or simple support from here. It's possible I was on the wrong line for support, but the fact is that I couldn't find support except for snippets online.
The others of MootBot and Ubottu have both done exceptional work. I don't feel the get the credit they deserve for this. Perhaps they do, but we wouldn't be as efficient as we are now without the contributions of these developers.
There is a problem that we have faced (if you're like me). We want both in our channel, but we only want one bot. We don't want to learn how to setup both bots. We don't want duplicate logging. We don't want unneeded network connections. We don't want to manage two separate systems. We don't want to bots in the channel. We don't want...
The solution: pick one bot and port the other tools to it.
Yup, we done it. We picked Supybot for reasons listed above as well as others. We took the single script for Eggdrop. We converted it to a plugin for Supybot. We released it officially.
This project started out a simple clone of MootBot. It has since become it's own project in many ways. In many ways, it's still the same. It still performs the same functionality; but now it will work right on top of your existing SupyBot setup.
In the future, we intend to develop a PPA for this to simplify the process further. For now, we have a tarball that you can just put in the plugins/ directory.
