I think it's come time for somebody to write a down to earth article about using IRC for advice. In short, it's best to never assume any advice on IRC is good advice. This is for a multitude of reasons.
IRC is a place for people to come and communicate with one another. Most of them do not have degrees in what you are requesting advice on. In fact, it's likely that not a single person on any network you are on has any document stating they know what they're talking about.
If you're asking for how to cook food, perhaps somebody may have a clue. If nobody is around with a clue and you continue to reask the same question then you're likely to have some random person find a random recipe online and will benefeit nothing more than if you did your own research
Medical advice is another one ocassionally brought up. Yes, free medical advice is great. There is less than a one to one billion chance that somebody with a medical degree is on any IRC network at all. What you'll get instead is people giving you their life experiences or just looking up what your complaint is online. Medical advice gained on IRC has absolutely no bearing in the real world unless it's something you could have easily found online yourself.
For this relationship advice. The advice on relationshops can be given in a few simple lines. So for this section, there's just a few bullets.
- We don't want to know about your personal life
- We don't care about your personal life
- If you don't ask her, don't expect her to ask you
- If you don't tell her, don't expect her to tell you
- If you don't want her to cheat on you, don't do it to her
- Nice guys finish last when you're dealing with whores
- If you don't want a relationship, don't pretend to
- Don't let the relationship take everything from you (money, social life, etc)
- You get what you put in
- Use Common Sense
Above all, don't follow any of this advice.
What you're looking for on here is somebody that has the answer for you. Probably because you don't want to consult a professional or gain your own life experiences. This is not what IRC is for. Please abstain from questions that require either life experience on your part, or a consultation with a professional in the subject matter.
Now... If you're looking for advice about computers or anything similar to this, IRC is your place. Have fun.
